How does your story make a customer feel?

The Story of Telling is a blog about building your brand and business around a story that resonates with clients. Bernadette Jiwa shows readers how to make people fall in love with their idea by telling a story.

The business with the better story, can:

  1. change the conversation.
  2. change how clients feel about themselves.
  3. define how you want others to perceive you.

The business with the better story…wins!

Your prospective and existing clients are always telling you what they want and what they are feeling (feeling being the key word). They are providing you with the input to help you define your story. Unfortunately, you may be like most businesses who are so in love with their idea and telling people how great their idea or business is, you don’t notice that no one is listening. Or you may have noticed but don’t understand why.

The reason no one is listening to you is because you are talking “AT” people about what you do. People listen only after they are heard. People listen if you connect to them by illustrating you empathize with how they feel. People connect if you make them feel better about the decision they are about to make. Your story needs to connect with how they are feeling or want to feel.

Relieving pain is an old way of thinking. Making a person feel more empowered, more engaged, and special (notice the word “and” instead of “or”) provides a sense of community is why Starbucks has been so successful.

To quote Bernadette:

Marketing is no longer a tactic used to sell stuff. It’s about finding ways to create meaning and make people feel something, rather than making them do what you want them to do in the short term.

To quote Viditude:

Video is a means to make people feel, connect and engage through your words, expressions (voice & physical), and stage. The combination tells a story that resonates. Video is a means to be helpful and of value to existing and prospective clients on a 1 to 1 basis for the long term.

Bernadette’s book, Make Your Ideas Matter, will help you build a better business story. Pat Ferdinandi’s book, Your Video Playbook, will help you tell your business story through video.

Comic Sans is not the type for you

Adding a “title” or “call out” to your video is an excellent way to emphasize points made during your “talking head” video. Just look at the image in the right column of our blog. We use text effectively on the “TV screen” in the video. The problem arises when you use a font that is more decorative than functional. Your choice of font can distract the viewer from your message while leaving them with a less professional image of you.

Decorative fonts have their place maybe for leading titles for an interior decorator…for moving text on an insurance video, not so much.

It’s all about comfort in reading or readability. Yes, our eyes may be used to comic sans because of its wide usage (posters in stores). In reality, it’s not. A sans serif font leads a reader from one word to the next with ease. The lack of dramatic strokes allows the viewer to concentrate on your voice and message.

Decorative fonts takes a viewer more time to read and requires more attention to interpret what is written. Since time is so valuable to keep, it is not worth a viewers attention. Result, the viewers click away faster. If you want to give an illusion of young, hip, easy-going, relaxed, informal, create a story worth hearing by that type of client. Do not give the viewer an adolescent interpretation by using comic sans.

Comic sans (chalkboard, captain comic, cartoon script)  is best left off the web and to be used for birthday cards and comic books (the paper kind) or kiddie toy labels (remember the Beanie Babies). Other decorative fonts in the script family, old english family, or gothic family to name a few; need to be avoided as well.

Test yourself.  Type a couple of sentences on separate sheets of paper using different fonts. They are clearly seen and easily read on the web. Remember, you want people to notice what you have to say and not be distracted by the type. Comic sans gives the impression you are reaching a younger (under age 10) audience. If that is not your audience, use a different font.  My personal favorite fonts to use in videos are Verdana or Lucida Sans.

Want to learn more about typography, this video provides a brief history. It is also a great example of a short video is good when it educates and entertains:

Mashable had a great post last year dedicated to the feelings towards Comic Sans. To see the impact of choosing a bad font, watch this video:
